Scheduled inventory counts and packages
Currently we are not using the scheduled inventory function of flex and looking to implement it in the future. In testing it looks like every single item needs to be scanned for inventory, even if it is a permanent part of a package or virtual item. Am I correct in this assessment and how would you suggest handling things such as racked equipment that has no space to put a bar code on an outward facing surface?

Hey Scott,
Thanks for your question! The scheduled counts are specifically set up for entire inventory counts though you can count a group and reconcile just that. If you are looking to only check individual items, and they are serialized, you can always open the item up and use the "Reset for Physical Count" option in the workbench menu on the right-hand side, which will allow you to basically mark everything out of inventory and once you scan them back in, they would be counted, showing you what your on-hand quantity is.
When it comes to the scheduled counts, the idea is that every physical item needs to be counted. The idea there being accountability. If we let you scan packages and cases, which in turn "counts" their contents, how can we ensure that those items are actually in those cases? What if an amp was removed from the amp rack and sent out for repair, and you scanned the rack and it counted that missing amp? The idea behind this is absolute accountability.
For things like racks where it's hard to get a barcode onto a surface on an outward-facing surface, you can make cheat sheets in the Inventory menu, or alternatively, you can always put the barcodes for the items that are in the case on the outside of the case. I hope that helps!

Joseph, the scheduled inventory counts do not affect contents of a container. You're safe on that front. You speakers will remain in the "Contents" tab of the specific case.
Scott, note on barcoding rack equipment, I recommend physically barcoding them if at all possible. I've helped Flex clients to successfully barcode MOST rack items with some creative barcode templates. For instance, utilizing a barcode template that has varying size 2D barcodes, you can then simply trim the one that is the best fit for any available surface space and apply. Even applying to a rack ear can work.
Lastly, I would highly recommend a training session on scheduled inventory counts. It's critically important, and there is some hand-holding that needs to be done with the system. The reconciliation process is especially tricky with non-serialized items. A good plan and solid understanding of the process will go a long, long way. I'm a consultant that is endorsed by Flex. Scott Trouwborst, you'll need to turn on the Serial Number Browser which shows serialized units in your inventory tree.
Inventory > Inventory Settings > Serial Number Browser Enabled - "Yes"
Refresh your inventory tree, and then you'll be able to see the units. Then simply drag and drop them into your cheat sheets.- Aaron Horn
