Narrative Description vs. Notes

    Hi Greg-

I understand the confusion as there is some potential crossover in the use of these two fields. To me, Notes could be used as an internal or external note while Narrative Description is more like a sentence or two about the item which is always the same from job to job.

I've developed a report for a Flex user which shows item photos and narrative descriptions in their quote (see below). You wouldn't want to use the Notes field for this purpose in case you need to enter job-specific notes in the quote as well.

    Hope that helps!

Greg, some clients will copy from the manufacturer's summary or spec page about the item and stick it in the narrative description as an internal reference.  But like you're pointing out, it doesn't really show up anywhere conveniently in the system, and not everyone has the ability to edit inventory items to be able to view that info.  A custom report like Bigs is showing can be a big help. You could also add a custom text field to your inventory models so that specific information could be populated for anyone to see within the GUI on a model page without having to have inventory editing permissions.

Thank you both for responding. Asking Flex to develop custom reports isn't something that we've done yet. This could be the next step. Hopefully in Flex 5 this is something that is made more easily to reference.

Hey Greg Marullo, just for clarification, Bigs and I are independent consultants that are Flex endorsed (see here).  But we don't work directly for Flex.  We've both done plenty of custom reports, so you're in good hands if you need one from either of us.  Just wanted to clarify.  Thanks Greg!
