Is it possible to make all the same gear come up as one item with a total
instead of the same item multiple times
and is there a way to "tag" groups of items for certain "areas"

Yves Douville This is one of the many data manipulation features we are able to include in our custom reports. Our Smart Pull Sheet and Smart Manifest reports include "consolidated" modes, in which identical line items are consolidated together and the total quantity is shown.
In fact, they can even show consolidated quantities across multiple pull sheets or manifests in a project tree as shown here:
