Barcode labels for Rigging

Hello all,

Just curious do any of you barcode loose rigging, ie shackles?

Trying to find a good workable solution for barcoding them, more for rigging inspection purposes rather than Flex side but interested if anyone can send pictures of what you use.

    Hey Mark!

    In my experience with shackles of the below style, I'd usually put a 2"x1" label along the red line, and etch the barcode number along the blue line for extra reference if the label fell off.



    Let me know if this helps! For things like MEGA-CLAMPs it would usually be a 2"x0.5" along one of the long flats, and again just using a DREMEL etcher to put the barcode number on there as well.

    With Shackles like the one below, we usually painted them a unique color- but to individually identify, I'd suggest using metal tags with a cable attachment through the pin eyelet.

    Hi Aaron,

    Thanks for your replies.

    It's the second example that we're struggling with and to be honest everyone I speak to manually identifies them with literally a sharpie number or if the shackle identity tab, which is an area made for identification, then a physical stamp on that area.

    Trouble is in theory every shackle has to be identifiable for our LOLER rigging tests and I'd so love to barcode them as it would save any human error when entering numbers manually.

    We're working on heat shrinking printed barcodes onto the side of the shackle but need 4:1 clear Heat Shrink and think they might then be too thick when shrunk to read the 2D barcode clearly.

    We'll keep working on it and If we get something that works I'll let you know!

    If anyone else manages to do this, please let us know what the answer is!

    Hey Mark! 

    I will agree that the 4:1 and labels is a viable option- just ensure to enlarge the barcode element on the label you print for those shackles- this will help overcome any potential read issues caused by the heatshrink. An organization I worked with in the past utilized a similar process for unique specialty cables with molded-on connectors.

    Another alternative I'm currently exploring is an RFID Cable Tie (Cable Tag) from 'AbleID'. Am waiting on pricing and then testing; but thought I'd put it across your desk as well, considering they're your side of the pond.
